Gamle Mursten is a company that makes a difference to the environment. Through a unique patented cleaning method, we ensure that reclaimed bricks are recycled.
Our bricks are cleaned using vibrations; no chemicals or water is used, therefore there is no emission of hazardous substances in the production. The cleaned bricks are stacked on pallets, shrink-wrapped and then stored in our dry facility; ready to use in new construction and renovations where the developer wants to reduce their carbon footprint, or where there is a desire for an rustic yet robus expression.

Why a brick lasts for several thousand years
Bricks is a fascinating building material that has been produced throughout time.
The main ingredient in bricks is clay, which is shaped and fired at high temperatures to form the ceramic structure we know as a brick – a building material that is almost indestructible.
The simple list of ingredients and the robust manufacturing process mean that bricks have a longer lifespan than many other building materials.
Over time, a brick gets stronger, whilst retaining its structure
This happens as the bricks gradually absorb and release moisture, helping to avoid large changes in volume and tension in the material, which could otherwise lead to cracking or degradation.
As a result, bricks used in construction can remain solid and stable for many decades, even in different climates. For thousands of years, bricks have been the foundation of both cool rooms, hot chimneys, shelter from wind and moisture, and in buildings such as Roman aqueducts, village churches and numerous homes.

Why use lime mortar instead of cement mortar?
At Gamle Mursten, it’s not just the bricks that we focus on.
Your bricks may be 200 years old, and can still last for at least another 200 years, it’s just as much about which mortar is used for the brickwork.
The choice of mortar in particular, can have a big impact on durability and maintenance, plus future disassembly and reuse.
Construction during the winter - dry bricks / wet bricks
Lime mortar allows your building and bricks to breathe and helps regulate the moisture within the brickwork.
Lime mortar allows the moisture to evaporate slowly, which helps prevent discoloration, efflorescence extraction and frost damage.
If you are laying bricks during winter and using lime mortar, the masonry must be kept above 5 degrees to prevent the hardening process in the mortar from stopping. The same rules apply to cement mortars, but here manufacturers allow the addition of agents that make it possible to build with a few precautions, however, it is often the case that the right strength and thus long durability isn’t achieved.

When we deliver recycled bricks to both large and small projects, we always focus on ensuring consistent quality from the first to the last delivery.
Pallet number 1 must be identical to pallet number 2000. We attach great importance to ensuring that the recycled bricks are sorted as uniformly as possible, while preserving their unique character, history and natural variations in the surface.
