Laboratory
Gamle Mursten’s laboratory offers to sample, test and quality assure your reclaimed bricks so they can be CE-marked and reused in new construction.
Gamle Mursten is a knowledge-based company that tests reclaimed bricks for reuse.
We take brick samples from old buildings that are to be demolished, and based on the samples, we conduct a thorough test for pressure, frost and water absorption at our audited laboratory.
Samples are taken from buildings (in Denmark) based on various criteria regarding the building’s condition, age, etc.
All in order to obtain a qualified decision-making basis for material mapping of the bricks before demolition.
If the bricks can be pre-approved according to CE quality requirements, the tender for demolition must be drawn up so that the bricks are not destroyed.
When we get an indication of the quality of the bricks at an early stage before demolition, we can also assess whether we can CE-quality-assure the bricks if they are subsequently to be cleaned and reused.
If the bricks can be pre-approved according to our CE quality requirements, the demolition tender must be prepared so that the bricks are not destroyed.
Gamle Mursten’s laboratory tests for pressure, frost and water absorption and determines whether the stones are suitable for recycling.
Important considerations
Recycling old bricks, CE-marking, Urban Mining agreements and everything our laboratory can help you with.
Save money and CO2 with quality stone that can be CE-marked and reused in new construction
Get a handle on the quality of the resources before demolition; every time a new brick is replaced with an old one, there is both money and CO2 to save.
With Gamle Mursten’s laboratory test and our patented cleaning method, you are also assured of a sustainable building. The CE-mark is your guarantee that the reclaimed bricks continue to meet the highest standards.
CE-marking of used quality bricks helps ensure the sustainability of your new building – also in the long term.
Resource mapping and testing of reclaimed bricks
Even if you or your customer do not want the bricks returned, a great environmental gain can still be achieved and money and CO2 can be saved during demolition.
Gamle Mursten’s laboratory offers a circular solution for the construction waste fraction “bricks”, where Gamle Mursten upcycles the bricks.
Our environmental product declaration (EPD) shows that you save 0.5 kg. CO2 per recycled brick = 1 ton of saved Co2 by recycling 2,000 bricks.
With this solution, your customers will save costs for transport and taxes at the reception sites, which easily outweigh the costs for testing and removing the bricks.
Should your customers want the bricks incorporated into a new project, the bricks can be bought back as CE-marked bricks with a guarantee of quality and assurance that there is a sufficient quantity of bricks available.
Reclaimed bricks in an Urban Mining deal
Quality-approved reclaimed bricks that meet the requirements for a CE-marking can be included in an Urban Mining agreement;
Here we store the cleaned and packaged CE-marked bricks at our brick hotel until the client wants them delivered to the construction site for a new building.
CE-marking of reclaimed bricks
CE-marking of reclaimed bricks at Gamle Mursten is your guarantee that the quality of the bricks is top-notch.
To obtain the marking, the bricks must be tested for pressure, frost and water absorption with a satisfactory result.
Gamle Mursten has worked hard to have an EAD, an ETA and a so-called declaration of conformity made, which together can be equated with a harmonized standard.
And we are the first company in Denmark to both sell and market reclaimed bricks with documented performance and quality.
Until a few years ago, there were no recycled products that could be CE-marked. Reclaimed bricks from demolitions could not obtain the mark because they were produced before the CE system was introduced and before a harmonized standard existed.
Gamle Mursten takes brick samples from your old buildings and carries out tests for pressure, frost, water absorption and pore filling, which reveal whether the bricks meet the quality requirements of the CE marking.
With an Urban Mining agreement on circular resource use, the developer helps ensure sustainability in new construction.
European standardisation and CE marking
The CE-mark is necessary to be allowed to sell and produce a great many products in Europe.
Construction products that are covered by a product directive and a harmonized standard must be CE-marked before they can be marketed on the European market.
The CE-mark ensures the free movement of goods throughout the EEA, and via the CE-mark the manufacturer or importer ensures that the product has been produced in accordance with the legal requirements for the relevant directive.
The CE-mark guarantees that there is sufficient documentation on quality and production method.
With over 20 years of experience in cleaning and recycling bricks for both renovation and new construction, we are happy to share our knowledge and expertise.
Gamle Mursten's dedication to reusing old bricks is borne of over two decades of experience and expertise. We have in-depth knowledge of every step in the brick life cycle and the complex landscape of responsible building practices.
